Job Summary:

The Deputy Manager will work and support the Unit Manager in ensuring the effective management of the overall 24 hour service provided within the clinical area.The post holder will work within the principles of the agreed model of care for the service and the requirement of the Care Program Approach.The post holder is responsible for providing direct care to identified patients from admission to discharge.

Duties & Responsibilities:


1.1To support the implementation of the agreed model of care in the clinical area

1.2Participate in setting and monitoring standards of care and to participate in quality improvement programmes as required

1.3To ensure that the statutory requirements of the Mental Health Act (2007) and the Code of Practice (2008) are adhered to in the case of detained patients

1.4To support the manager in ensuring that the resources for the unit are utilised appropriately

1.5To promote and facilitate user involvement in the daily function of the unit

1.6To ensure Risk Manager including Health and Safety regulations are adhered to

1.7Ensure that clients receive a culturally competent service

1.8Implement relevant Company and Unit Policies and Procedures

1.9Supervise admin staff ensuring that the standard of work is carried out in accordance with MHA requirements and company standards

1.10Motivate and act as a role model to all members of the team

1.11Promote effective and supportive relationships within the clinical team

1.12Administer and monitor the effects and side effects of medication and to manage all aspects of medication inline with the NMC and Unit guidelines

1.13Act as an advocate in the best interest of the service users and carers

1.14Develop a range of bi-psycho-social skills in order to provide an holistic care package

2.0Professional and Managerial Leadership

2.1Deputise for the Unit Manager, and to have 24 hour responsibility for the management of the unit in the absence of the Unit Manager

2.2Ensure the efficient use of staffing resources, safe staffing levels with the appropriate skill and gender mix on each shift

2.3Supervise the work of junior staff ensuring that the standards of care are carried out in accordance with Unit policies and procedures

2.4Supervise admin staff ensuring the standard of work is carried out in accordance with MHA requirements and company standards

2.5Motivate and act as a role model to all members of the team

2.6Promote and effective and supportive relationships within the clinical team

3.0Quality, Governance and Administration

3.1To act as a Named Nurse and work with the service users, cares and care coordinators to promote individual packages of care

3.2Encourage the development and/or maintenance of social, family and personal relationships for the service user

3.3To ensure meaningful activity is provided for residents and to be aware of the importance of Occupational, Social and Diversional therapies

3.4Promote and participate in carrying out audits supervised by the Unit Manager or in conjunction with other healthcare professionals

3.5Support the Unit Manager is collecting and distributing data as required (statistical and research based)

3.6Gain an understanding of the research process and its application to the clinical setting

3.7Provide clinical supervision to the team as required

3.8Ensure a high standard of professional conduct and nursing care is maintained at all times in accordance with the guidelines set my NMC

3.9Act as a mentor to student nurses, and to provide preceptorship for newly qualified nurses and ensure an effective training environment for all staff

3.10Participate and provide clinical and managerial supervision and take responsibility for own supervision and appraisal

3.11Be responsible for keeping up to date with current clinical research, current issues within the health care sector and advances in mental health nursing and any other clinical or management practises relevant to the place of work
