Our Service Users Stories
Take a look at what some of our service users have to say about the care journey at St Matthews Healthcare
‘Living my Best Life‘
T has lived at Broomhill for over 3 years now. She has a complex and enduring mental health condition, is blind and receives two on one care.
She arrived as a step down from a medium secure setting and with our support T has made great strides forward. She is happy and living her best life here at Broomhill in our open rehab unit. She is settled, knows the staff, and has a lovely, large double, bright ensuite room with views of the expansive rolling gardens.
T is resilient and an inspiration to us. Her journey has been fraught, but she is brave and is now able to manage her mental health better and lives a normal life, supported and enabled by her MDT team.
T explains: ‘I love it here. They see me as a whole person, I’m not treated as any different and I feel like I am part of the community.
Good things happen here. Since I have been here, I have been able to go out to the hairdressers for the first time in 30 years. This would have been unthinkable for me to do something as normal as this before.
My days are full of activities and trips. I go shopping, or to the movies, or go out for tea. I visit my nieces and also go see my Dad in Milton Keynes. I just finished the Recovery College and learnt to cook lots of things
It is very nice here, the staff are very good and know their stuff.’
‘I Can See the Future Now‘
L, aged 19 years old, arrived at our locked unit in Broomhill from another hospital with a serious mental health condition and was feeling very low.
Working with her MDT team she moved to open rehab and is now in a much better place within herself. She has made her large, airy ground floor ensuite room her own, joins in with activities, goes on escorted trips and is looking to the future with plans to live independently when she moves into supported accommodation.
L is strong young woman and as her team we are so proud of the progress she has made. Using a recovery focussed approach we have helped her to progress and take control of her own destiny.
L explains… ‘I wasn’t in a good place when I arrived here from the other hospital, but they made me feel very welcome. They showed me around and were kind to me. I think my medications and the support from the doctors and the rest of the team has helped me a lot.
This is the nicest hospital I have ever stayed in, the surroundings are beautiful and the layout is good and people have been kind. I like walking to the local village which is about 20 minutes away. They listen to me and will always talk to me when I have needed help.‘
